New Water-Soluble Shirt Bags

A UK company has developed a new eco-friendly shirt bag that can be disposed of by soaking in water.

Birmingham-based Danjim Marketing developed the new packaging to replace the non-biodegradable plastic wrapping currently used to pack shirts for shipping. The new bio-degradable water-soluble packaging is identical in style to standard non-biodegradable shirt bags but are made from Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) rather than Polypropylene.

Danjim managing director Shammem Kazmi says: “PVA is a plastic-type substance that dissolves when it comes into contact with water. Our technology is very unique as we can make the bags that will react to cold or hot water, and we can even set the temperature. The bags have a fine glossiness and a high degree of clarity, anti-static, and no anti-oxidiser.”

The new packaging will allow retailers to reduce the amount of plastic being sent to landfill by disposing of discarded shirt wraps by placing them in water.

Shammem Kazmi says retailers are looking for eco-friendly packaging alternatives and the new water-soluble shirt bags will help meet that need. “The majority of shirt bags currently in use are not recycled, and end up in landfill sites where they take hundreds of years to degrade. PVA is completely non-toxic so there is no harm to the environment or the consumer, and it could save thousands of tonnes of material going to landfill every year.”

Danjim Marketing is an environment-focused business, which specialises in product innovation and new technology. It works with manufacturers, universities and retailers to develop new technologies and products that are fully sustainable in a demanding environment.
