NatureFlex Packaging Certified CarbonNeutral

Convex Plastics, September 12th, 2011

The cellulose-based NatureFlex films marketed by Convex Plastics and contained in their new coffee packs are now not only bio-degradable – they are also CarbonNeutral.

NatureFlex’s UK-based manufacturer’s, Innovia Films, gained CarbonNeutral certification in March for its entire range of NatureFlex coated biodegradable and compostable packaging films.

NatureFlex films are made from cellulose-based material derived from renewable wood pulp sourced from managed plantations that either have or are actively working towards Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification. NatureFlex films are also bio-degradable and certified under ASTM D6400 to compost within six weeks.

According to Innovia Films, the CarbonNeutral certification was achieved through an independent assessment of the carbon dioxide emissions produced by the manufacturing of its NatureFlex products.

The company has been involved in carbon offset projects which support the development of anaerobic digestion (AD) facilities in the Netherlands.

Innovia Films business development and sustainability manager, Andy Sweetman said, “The fit between this type of project and NatureFlex is perfect as NatureFlex is suitable for disposal using emerging 'waste to energy' techniques such as AD, aiding the diversion of organic wastes from landfill.”
