High moisture barrier compostable packaging is now available to pack dried foods such as biscuits, cereals and snack bars.

Launched last November at the 2008 European Bioplastics Conference in Berlin by Innovia Films, the new NatureFlex NK film incorporates a unique coating technology that allows it to offer similar moisture barrier properties to co-extruded Oriented Polypropylene (OPP) film.

Prior to the launch of NatureFlex NK compostable packaging materials provided minimal barrier properties and were typically used with fresh and chilled food products where their permeability proved an advantage.
Innovia Films global marketing manager for sustainable technologies, Andy Sweetman says, “Testing has confirmed that the moisture barrier of NK is similar to that of conventional plastics such as polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET).”
NatureFlex NK is also heat sealable on both sides, has a print receptive surface and offers high transparency and gloss.

NatureFlex films are produced from sustainable wood pulp harvested from managed plantations and are certified to both EU (EN13432) and US (ASTM D6400) composting standards. They are available in New Zealand from Convex Plastics.
