Competitively-Priced Renewable Packs for Coffee and Dry Foods

Convex Plastics, April 23rd, 2009

Renewable vacuum packs providing the ideal sealing and barrier properties for coffee and dry foods will soon be available from Convex Plastics for almost the same cost as conventional plastic packs.

Specifically developed by Convex Plastics to meet the increasing demand for renewable coffee packaging - the new packs will provide the high moisture and oxygen properties provided by NatureFlex™ cellulose films and the high seal strength of Greensack made from cornstarch.

Convex Plastics Technical Manager Andrew Sheerin says the new packs are made from a combination of three separate films, which are laminated together to provide a high level of functionality at a competitive price point – not much more than coffee packs made from conventional non-renewable film.

Andrew says, “Convex has been working with a number of eco-friendly packaging options for a long time now and we have developed a good understanding of each film’s strengths and limitations. This knowledge has enabled us to combine the strengths of three different films to produce a biodegradable vacuum pack with the best possible functionality for cold coffee beans, coffee grinds, and a wide range of other dry goods such as tea, bakery goods and dehydrated fruits.”

The new packaging is a triplex laminate featuring the clear NatureFlex™ NK film (which provides a high O2 barrier) on the outside, metallised NatureFlex™ NM film used by Twinings Tea (which provides a high moisture barrier), and Greensack film as the inner wrap (which provides high sealability through coffee granules and other contaminants).

Andrew says that along with providing the ideal barriers and sealing for coffee and dry foods, the combination of the NatureFlex™ films with Greensack will enable Convex to customise the thickness and stiffness of the packs to get the right look and feel for each customer.

The new renewable vacuum packs will be available from Convex Plastics in May. To order a trial pack please contact Andrew Sheerin at: 07 958 1770 or andrew.s@convex.co.nz.

Convex is also working to develop a renewable vented pack for hot roasted coffee beans and grinds and is in the process of evaluating biodegradable venting valves.
