Bio-Degradable Vented Pack for Hot Roasted Coffee Beans

The Convex technical team are currently trialing a prototype pack and are expecting to commercialise the coffee packs in the New Year.
Convex Technical Manager Andrew Sheerin says the new packs have been specifically developed to meet the increasing demand for renewable packaging for hot roasted coffee beans and grinds.
Andrew says, “We launched a biodegradable vacuum pack earlier this year for cold coffee and coffee grinds, and we are now working on a vented pack for hot coffee beans and grinds. The big challenge with the hot bean pack is the need for a suitable venting system. Almost all of the traditional-style venting valves available are either made from non-renewable materials or not very functional. In the end we decided to vent the packs using our Opti~fresh technology and it appears to be working very well.”
In addition to the Opti~fresh technology, the new coffee packs feature a metallised cellulose-based NatureFlex™ NM film on the outside (which provides a high moisture barrier), and a cornstarch-based Greensack film as the inner wrap (which provides high sealability through coffee granules and other contaminants).
Andrew says that along with providing the ideal barriers and sealing for coffee and dry foods, the combination of the NatureFlex™ and the Greensack films will enable Convex to customise the thickness and stiffness of the packs to get the right look and feel for each customer.
“Our aim is to provide functional bio-degradable packaging that will meet our customer’s desired specifications for whatever they want to pack, particularly in terms of barrier properties and shelf appeal”, Andy says.
