Innovative Printing Process Produces Laminated Metallic Lustre

Convex Plastics, June 25th, 2001

An innovative new printing process developed by Convex Plastics offers maximum shelf appeal through the use of pearlised inks.

Pearlised inks are able to be laminated and produce a metallic lustre that enhances the appearance of the packaging. The printing process developed by Convex Plastics is believed to be the first of its type to provide detailed photographic quality graphics in up to eight colours using pearlised inks on polyethylene film.

According to Convex Plastics Printing Manager, Gary Dillistone, using pearlised inks is the ideal option for anyone wanting to increase the visibility and shelf appeal of their packaging. It also overcomes the technical difficulties associated with the lamination of real metallics, while still producing a similar high-gloss reflective look.

Printing with pearlised inks also increases the strength of the packaging and provides a dense ink cover that enables the packaged product to be completely blocked out from view, if required.

Effem Foods selected Convex Plastics' pearlised ink printing to enhance the shelf appeal of their recently launched range of PEDIGREE® OPTIMUM chilled dog rolls. The company's marketing manger pet care, Mike Roberts says, "I am very pleased with the results that the new pearlised inking process achieved for our PEDIGREE® OPTIMUM dog roll packaging. The pearlised finish provided a superior premium metallic finish to the packaging that was difficult to achieve using traditional inks."
