Convex Plastics Printing Manager, Gary Dillistone, was proud to receive a Gold medal at this year’s Pride in Print Awards.

A strong commitment to high quality printing and staff development has won Convex Plastics the top awards for both flexographic printing and personnel this year.

In two separate award ceremonies last month, Convex Plastics was recognised as a supreme award finalist and gold medal winner at the annual New Zealand printing industry Pride in Print Awards, and a Convex Plastics apprentice was named the best flexographic printing apprentice in New Zealand.

Convex Plastics Printing Manager, Gary Dillistone, believes the awards reflect the strength of the company’s printing capabilities and their on-going commitment to quality and training. He says, "We have a very high achieving team here where everybody plays a part and is recognised for their input. Because of this we produce a consistently high standard of printing and have secured a solid reputation as one of the leading trainers of printing personnel likely to become the industry leaders of the future."

This year’s Pride in Print Awards attracted 971 entries and only nine, including the gold-medal winning entry from Convex Plastics, made it to the supreme award finals.

Convex also received two highly commended accolades at the Pride in Print Awards for packaging they printed for New Zealand company Donovans Chocolates, and Australia’s Master Foods. This year’s Pride in Print Award wins take Convex’s tally to 1 gold and 8 highly commendeds since 1993.

According to Gary Dillistone, Convex Plastics is especially pleased with the industry recognition for their printing as the winning entries were selections of their everyday work and not specifically produced for the competition. He says, "Everything we enter is done as a production run so that makes our work consistently high in quality."
Convex Plastics’ gold-medal winning entry was from a production run of lawn fertiliser packaging they manufactured and printed for Adelaide-based client, Manutec pty Ltd. The same packaging also scored them a silver medal at the Australian Flexographic Technical Association (AFTA) awards last year.

The evening after the Pride in Print Awards, on June 25th, 24-year-old Nigel Hayes also made the company proud by heading off nineteen other apprentices to become the fourth Convex Plastics printing apprentice to win the Dupont Award in ten years.

As part of his prize Nigel will travel to the US in August as a guest of Dupont to undertake further training and review the latest printing technologies and procedures.

The Dupont Award has been running for 14 years, and is judged on each candidate’s performance as an apprentice, their knowledge of flexographic printing and related safety and environmental issues, and their past and future-planned participation in New Zealand’s printing industry.

According to the organiser of the Dupont Awards, Frank Brokken, Nigel’s win is a reflection of the training and effort that Convex put into their staff in training and development. He describes Convex Plastics’ Dupont success record as `an outstanding accomplishment’, and says they are one of the leading trainers of flexographic printers in New Zealand.
